The first example of a new type of shaft seal for oil-lubricated propeller shafts has been fitted, and more orders for the environmentally-friendly design are said to be pending. Lubrication systems for propeller shafts tend to fall into two main groups - oil- and water-lubricated - and the sealing systems used with them into a few well known types. They are designed to prevent water ingress into a vessel in the case of water lubrication and to prevent egress of oil from the propeller shaft lubrication system into the water if an oil-lubricated system is in use. Seals generally fall into two groups, a 'lip type' seal and a 'face' or mechanical seal, and most face seals are of the single barrier type.
