Designing a vessel that does not need ballast water is the most obvious way of solving the issue of preventing transferring alien species in ballast tanks. And that was the task set for entrants to a competition organised by the foundation Dutch Maritime Network (NML) with the aid of the Ministry of Transport. The winners, Clemens van der Nat and Eelco van Rietbergen of Bluewater Energy Systems of Hoofddorp, Netherlands, received their prize, a cheque for EUD10,000 ($12,000), half of which will be spent on further research, from minister of transport, Karla Peijs. The competition asked for the design of a water ballast-free vessel up to about 20,000 tonnes carrying capacity. Van der Nat and Van Rietbergen adapted the design of a Spliethoff vessel of just over 21,000dwt with dimensions of 170.0m x 25.3m x 10.7m (length x beam x draught), constructed in 2000, to a ballast free vessel.
