Increasing congestion on the roads in Europe and the impact on the environment from ever-increasing road traffic has led to a number of projects that aim to try to get freight off the roads. Making better use of inland waterways would seem to be one solution and it is being addressed in the development of an innovative ro-ro design in the pan-European INTERMODESHIP project, which is being conducted by a consortium of companies including TTS Ships Equipment in Norway, Kockums Engineering and RWS Line in Sweden.
