Heavylift carriers have become something of a rare breed, as a glance at the newbuilding pages of Solutions will show. Builders' order books currently only list a dozen under construction or on order world-wide. Because the shipment of extraordinary cargoes demands a high degree of abilities, both in vessel operations as well as their design, there is only a handful of owners active in this specialised field, mostly based in Germany and the Netherlands. Jumbo Shipping at Rotterdam, which is a 50/50 venture of the Kahn and Borchard families, is just such an owner. The company has a policy of continually up-grading its heavy lift fleet, which currently comprises 11 vessels of six different classes with lifting capacities ranging from 360 tonnes to 800 tonnes.
