Corrosion in tunnel thrusters of the type now commonly fitted on a wide range of ships is relatively easy to deal with, say firms that specialise in corrosion prevention, but a much more difficult problem to tackle is corrosion in azimuthing thrusters. Because they make ships so much more manoeuvrable, azimuthing thrusters are now being fitted to many more ship types than the tugs and offshore vessels they were first installed on. But while tugs and supply vessels are frequently in port and easier to attend to, larger cargo ships will be spending considerable lengths of time at sea and thrusters will usually only be examined during routine drydockings.
