Converting single ships for a new role is a common occurrence but series conversions of sister ships is less so. In the past year Scandinavian shipowners have embarked on a number of projects that have seen two pairs of ro-pax ferries undergoing structural changes and three Indian-built container/forest product carries booked in for lengthening to increase cargo capacity by around 50%. Stena Adventurer, Stena RoRo's second 44,200gt ro-pax ferry from Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea, was delivered in mid-May this year and assigned to the Holyhead - Dublin route across the Irish Sea in time for the peak season. The 211 m-long vessel - the longest to operate on that service - can accommodate 1,500 passengers and 3,400 lane-metres of freight space, and increased passenger capacity on the route by 50 per cent.
