A new pilot boat tracking system has won the approval of the Harwich Haven port controllers even though, as Harbour Master Ian Whale points-out; "the boats' crews are probably not aware of how much it benefits them." Following its introduction last year, the 14,000 boardings and landings that Harwich Haven's five pilot boats make annually are now being monitored for safety and efficiency in a way that was never possible before and the system has already proved its value in a man overboard emergency.
