The UK shiprepairer and conversion specialist Cammell Laird has had quite a rollercoaster ride recently. On the way up the big dipper its stole the Luxus Holdings contract to build two 400 berth 28,000 GT cruise vessels from Harland & Wolff in Belfast. They will be the first large cruise ships to be built in the UK since the 12,000 GT Odessa was delivered in July 1974 by Vickers to Black Sea Shipping of the then Soviet Union. The contract is thought to be valued at £334M ($484M) but is still subject to a government subsidy and loan guarantees from Lexus - a consortium headed by a former P&O director Jim Davis.
