Still rattled by the collapse of Hanjin Shipping, the South Korean government is directing an ambitious plan to rejuvenate the country's battered maritime sectors. While several South Korean shipping companies and shipbuilders have been in and out of receivership since the Asian financial crisis in 1997, the demise of Hanjin Shipping shocked many industry watchers. Once South Korea's largest shipping group, Hanjin struggled with chronic overcapacity in the container-liner sector, and accumulated more than USD5 billion when it filed for receivership in August 2016. Logistical chaos ensued as the company's vessels were stranded worldwide and creditors sought to arrest the ships. The administration of South Korea's former president, Park Geun-hye, made it clear that there would be no bailouts, to the disappointment of many in the industry who hoped that the government would rescue the company.
