The number of dry bulk carriers ordered in January-August has jumped by 81% against the same period last year, according to IHS Markit data. In the first eight months of 2018, there were contracts placed for 132 bulkers totalling 14 million dwt. This compares with 73 vessels of 7.3 million dwt ordered in January-August 2017. Orders comprising 5% of the global bulker fleet are currently under construction, the data show, although the percentage varies dramatically by segment: from 18% of the very large ore carrier (VLOC) fleet to just 1% of Handymaxes. For Capesizes, the figure is 4%; for Panamaxes, it is 7%. The greatest numbers of new orders have been in the Supramax and Handymax categories, with 36 and 34 vessels ordered so far this year, respectively. This is followed by 24 Capesizes, while VLOCs and post-Panamaxes have secured just 9 newbuilding contracts each.
