Like many people in shipping, Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou could say that the industry chose her, instead of the other way around. Despite growing up in a shipping family - her father was a captain - she initially decided to branch out into something fresh, in the belief that shipping was no more interesting than any other sector. A career in finance seemed like the logical next step, but lasted a grand total of three months. "We can safely say that I disliked it," she told Fairplay, with a hint of delight. A stopgap job in shipping was expected to last little more than several months, but she has not looked back since. "Thirteen years later I am still in the same group of companies and I love my job - and the industry," she explained. This is not to say that her choice has not brought challenges and frustrations. When she started out, shipping was famed for being insular and male-dominated, with a reputation for caring about little more than the bottom line, as well as being heavily resistant to change. Plenty of people would still recognise that description of the industry, yet Theodosiou believes cracks in this reputation are not only beginning to show, but have been little less than revolutionary.
