A new survey on cyber security has found that recent attacks on the shipping industry have been generally short-lived. Almost 80% of respondents were aware that a cyber attack had occurred within hours of its initiation, and 67% reported that their systems were back to normal in a matter of hours. Coverage of the financial consequences of cyber attacks was generally uninsured: only 16% of respondents reported that they obtained coverage; of those that did, two-thirds had coverage through a specific cyber policy, one-third through P&I. Asked for their views on which areas of their ships were most vulnerable to the threat of cyber attacks, navigation systems were cited the most (86%), followed by safety (46%), power (39%), and cargo control systems (33%).
