Ship operators may be able to optimise vessel loading by matching cargo volumes to port channel depths through a service that offers real-time monitoring of berth and harbour draughts. The K-Observer system, created by subsea technology specialist Kongsberg Maritime, would be a permanent installation at a specific vessel berth and at strategic points around a harbour. It uses acoustic monitoring of the seabed in a similar way to subsea monitoring equipment. The technology enables ships to be loaded more accurately so they can leave with the maximum amount of cargo they can safely carry. Acoustic measurements can be calculated down to 1 cm accuracy. "We can also set alarms so that the operator is notified if the depth comes within a half-metre of a pre-determined safety range," Carsten Frank, Kongsberg's product manager for infrastructure and marine robotics, told Fairplay sister publication Dredging and Port Construction.
