The man who has been heading the South African Insurance Association's organisational committee for this year's International Union of Marine Insurance's (IUMI's) annual conference in Cape Town said the African market remains one of complexity and competition. Mike Brews, head of underwriting at Horizon Underwriting Managers and member of the IUMI Cargo Committee, has been chairing the IUMI 2018 organising committee and believes the continent holds opportunities for insurers and brokers who are willing to understand its specific challenges. "The African market has been a target for many insurers for a number of years now," he explained. "The biggest hurdle is that most countries insist that insurance be placed locally and strictly limits access to 'international insurers'. Many insurers do not understand the infrastructure challenges faced in Africa, which can result in a number of unforeseen losses. "However, with easier access to new territories and better information becoming available, this market is constantly offering new opportunities," he added. Based in South Africa, Brews said his home country is not reflective of the broader continent and, like the more developed markets around the world, competition is driven both by the marine insurance sector and the desires of clients.
