Established in 1966, the Singapore Registry of Ships is the fifth largest in the world, with more than 3,000 vessels and an 8.7% share of the global fleet in 2017. Backed by Singapore's business-friendly government, it is widely recognised as a quality flag, while being party to all the major International Maritime Organization conventions on ship safety and marine pollution prevention. Bulk carriers represent the lion's share of Singapore's tonnage with more than 52 million dwt, followed by tankers (40 million dwt) and container ships (28 million dwt). Although a small part of its total fleet, Singapore's pure-car/truck-carrier vessels are dominated by larger ships. The registry has 50 PCTCs that hold 4,000 or more cars compared to just 15 of all other sizes.
