Like their counterparts elsewhere, Singapore-based shipowners and operators continue to suffer the ill effects of overcapacity currently plaguing the global fleet.The problem is largely attributed to speculative ordering across all vessel sectors - brought on by capital inflows in some cases - and shipowners have said this needs to be addressed for any sustainable recovery to take place."Both industrial owners, as well as financial investors, need to be more mindful of their individual actions on the collective demand and supply balances," cautioned Sebastien Brochet, senior vice-president of strategy, corporate development, and human resources at BW Group. "Shipping is a long-term investment to serve global shipping demand, and not a short-term speculation tool."
