Saudi Arabia reported that it had a good 2017, but withoil prices remaining low, some ports are facing funding problems that could stymie infrastructure projects for future growth.Throughput at its four biggest ports was up 6.5% in total, although performance was patchy, with Jeddah Islamic Port (JIP) static, and Dammam losing out to growth at the smaller port of Jubail. Data compiled by Fairplay based on Saudi Ports Authority statistics showed that Saudi throughput at its top four ports breached 8 million teu [see top table, page 40]."This has been a difficult time for container terminal operators at Dammam Port. Traffic has moved out of Dammam. In addition, as a gateway to Riyadh, and with oil prices low, demand in the local market is down," Shailesh Garg, general manager at Drewry Maritime Services India, told Fairplay.
