There were several significant fleet consolidations in the dry bulk space last year, and more merger and acquisition activity could be in store in 2018.In 2017, the fleet of private owner Quintana Maritime was bought by Oslo- and NASDAQ-listed Golden Ocean, NASDAQ-listed Eagle Bulk purchased the fleet of Norwegian OTC-listed Greenship Bulk Trust, and the private fleet of CarVal Investors was acquired by Norwegian OTC-listed GoodBulk.Bulk shipping merger and acquisitiontransactions are being driven less by operational economies of scale than by a desire among investors in the selling entity to convert their ownership into more liquid stock that allows them to profitably exit their positions.
