摘要

The 2016 amendments to the International Maritime Organization's (IMO's) Convention on Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic (FAL), which make the electronic exchange of information mandatory from April 2019 onwards, are likely to speed up the move to automated shipping at ports. The updated regulations, which came into force at the start of this year, are the latest step in the IMO's e-navigation efforts. Following in the wake of ECDIS, which saw reasonable success, the IMO is moving towards a 'maritime single window' that would allow electronic transmission of a single set of information to all interested stakeholders. This would pave the way for vessels to broadcast data to multiple shore-based entities.
