The crude-carrier sector is not the only tanker business experiencing consolidation. Chemical shipping has also seen mergers and acquisitions in recent months. In the latest deal, Hamburg-based Deutsche Afrika-Linien/John T Essberger Group (DAL/JTE) announced that it is boosting its chemical-tanker operations with the takeover of Copenhagen-based Crystal Nordic from its joint owners, Nordic Tankers and Embarcadero Maritime. The acquisition, which was announced on 2 January, will see Essberger Tankers' fleet increase from 23 to 37 vessels, all deployed in trades in north Europe and the Mediterranean. Financial information on the deal was not disclosed.
