Now that the Panamanian-flagged tanker Sanchi has sunk, taking an unknown quantity of highly toxic condensate oil and bunker fuel down with it, how much environmental damage lies ahead? The National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC)-owned vessel was carrying 136,000 tonnes of condensate, a highly volatile colourless oil, some of which will have burned off or evaporated in the blaze. Estimates of the amount of bunker fuel have ranged from 1,000-2,000 tonnes. Any oil still on board will slowly leak out over time and may be difficult to contain. The resultant spills have exceeded 330 km~2 in size.
