1. There are already more than 50 commercial shipping companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Although many market participants would prefer there to be fewer, the number looks set to increase, through the following avenues: Initial public offerings (IPOs): There has not been a shipping IPO since Gener8 Maritime in May 2015, but the drought could end. Seward & Kissel's Gary Wolfe believes there will be "two or three" IPOs this year. "We're seeing an increased level of interest in IPOs again," he told Fairplay. AMA Capital's Peter Shaerf predicted that "some people will get IPOs off this year", although he acknowledged that investors are still wary because of shipping stocks' poor performance (see chart, page 11). "The biggest barrierto IPOs is that people have lost money in shipping over the last decade and are reluctant to put their feet back in. Take the best tanker stock or the best bulker stock and compare it to the S&P [500 Index]. The performance is inferior," said Shaerf. Deutsche Bank analyst Amit Mehrotra predicted that IPOs "will probably start in 2019".
