Family-owned German shipowner Harren & Partner has finally reached an agreement with Japanese shipping major 'K' Line to take over its heavy-lift carrier SAL, a move which it hopes could spur more price discipline in the heavy-lift sector. According to Harren & Partner managing director, Martin Harren, SAL's integration will allow the company to take a dominant position in the premium heavy-lift segment, which would help increase "pricing discipline" in the sector. Freight and charter rates in the project cargo/ heavy-load segment reached new lows early this year, with average vessel earnings far below daily running costs. The Bremen-based owner of a diversified fleet of container vessels, dry cargo ships, tankers, and other types is already active in heavy-lift shipping both as asset owner and operator of ships through its group affiliate Combi Lift.
