It is one of life's truisms that politicians' good environmental intentions tend to go out of the window when economic fortunes falter. The current situation in the LNG carrier sector provides an illustration. Global slowdown, the continuing low prices of crude and coal, and some governments' resultant keenness to husband resources have combined in some locations to delay the shift to gas for power generation. Demand has slumped, defying 2011 predictions of a 'golden age' by the International Energy Agency. Just how far is demonstrated in one respect by the spot rate for LNG carriers. In 2012, in the aftermath of the Fukushima disaster as Japan and other nations turned away from nuclear power generation, this hit USD150,000/day before declining sharply. It was just USD30,000/day by late 2015.
