Tank coatings for product, gas, crude oil, chemical, and all tankers carrying liquid cargos, fail into seven categories: epoxy, epoxy phenolic, zinc silicate, polysilox-anes, stainless-steel, rubber, and tar epoxy. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages depending on the product to be carried. Oil tankers require different coatings to chemical tankers or vegetable oil tankers. Cargo tanks and slop tanks are coated accordingly. Most vessels will use a mixture of two or three coatings. Crude oil tankers coat their tanks almost exclusively in tar epoxy. This is to combat the corrosive pitting that occurs at the top of the tanks due to the gases released during transit.
