Cammell Lalrd, the Birkenhead shipbuilder and repairer, has won one of its more prestigious orders. The signing of a GBP200 million (USD294 million) contract to construct an advanced polar research vessel took place in November 2015,18 months after the UK government gave its support to the project. The yard is expected to begin cutting steel in June this year and to deliver the next-generation vessel ready for operation by the British Antarctic Survey, part of the UK's Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), in 2019.
