The first suspension of a European master for taking a ship from Europe for demolition in south Asia reveals the legal risk crews take in participating in such operations. On 26 May 2013, Netherlands-flagged box ship HMS Laurence, owned by Dutch company WEC Lines and operated and managed by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), was manoeuvred onto a beach in Alang in India prior to demolition. The master of the ship was identified from a video of the event he uploaded to YouTube. On investigation by Dutch authorities, it was found that the ship had transited from Europe to Alang - an illegal act under European waste shipment laws.
