Ron Widdows began his career in shipping sweeping the office floor in Guam and rose to chair the World Shipping Council, which works with government agencies to set policy for the industry. "I worked from the bottom up, at the terminal, in stevedoring, with equipment, trucking, and documentation," he tells IHS Fairplay. "I have been involved in most of the activities of a container shipping and terminal operator. I don't believe there is a better way to grow up in the business." With some humility, he says it was merely "a unique set of circumstances" that put him in the right place at the right time throughout his career. At the age of 18 he was operating telex machines, and was later promoted to ship husbandry. When US Lines launched its container ship operations in 1973, Widdows was the line's agent in Guam. He was asked to join the carrier, moving on six years later to APL. Within a year, he was running APL's equipment management operation in his home town, Oakland, California.
