A milestone for ballast water equipment compliance has been reached after regulators certified equipment for shipowners looking to trade in the United States. The US Coast Guard (USCG) gave its stamp of approval on 2 December to the Optimarin Ballast System (OBS), manu-factured by Oslo's Optimarin, thereby making it the only ballast water management system (BWMS) available that meets the regulatory requirements of flag states that are a party to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Ballast Water Management Convention, as well as stricter US testing standards.
