Japan's business philosophy of continual self-improvement is exemplified in liquefied natural gas carrier (LNGC) design and production by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). MHI's 155,000 m~3 Sayaendo-class has now made its service debut, and a follow-on generation is already in the making. This class is the result of a strategic focus on combining different areas of the group's know-how to foster more innovative, integrated design and engineering solutions. First encapsulated by the LNGC Seishu Maru, Sayaendo builds on tried-and-trusted Moss spherical cargo containment and home-grown steam turbine technologies to achieve an overall 20% gain in efficiency from the preceding 147,000 m~3 class of 'conventional' LNG carriers. Amid a commercial drive that has yielded orders for eight Sayaendo-class vessels, MHI embarked on a further stage of design development, leading to the contractual breakthrough last month for the follow-on breed of LNG carrier: the Sayaringo STaGE (an acronym derived from 'steam turbine and gas engines') type.
