摘要

Thailand is again the world's biggest rice exporter, even though supply chain issues persist, the country's rice trade body told IHS Maritime. Thailand exported 10.9 million tonnes of rice last year, up from 6.6 million tonnes in 2013, said Sermsak Kuonsongtum, vice-president of the Thai Rice Exporters Association (TREA). "It's a record," he told IHS Maritime. The figure goes some way to bucking the trend seen in the past three years, when exports dropped because of the former government's rice mortgage scheme that began in October 2011 and ended in 2013. The policy, launched by former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra, enabled farmers to be given loans based on the amount of rice harvested. This resulted in the government becoming the biggest buyer of domestically harvested rice. While the then-government claimed the policy would protect rice farmers, it made Thai rice less competitive than competing exports from Vietnam, Cambodia, and India.
