The recovery in period charter rates for larger gearless box ships is remaining on track up until Chinese New Year, with market pundits expecting only a brief pause before rates resume their ascent. Market barometers for the timecharter market continued to move up last week as the Hamburg ConTex gained another 1.7%, or 7 points, to close at 410 on 12 February. Hire rates across the major size classes of 1,100-4,250 teu are now on average almost 15% higher than in February 2014 with significant improvements particularly for the 4,250 teu baby-Panamaxes (+60.7% y/y) and the gearless 3,500 teu class (+27.6% y/y).
