After more than four years of being in the doldrums, the contango in oil trades has resuscitated the oil tanker market. However, the director and senior managing executive officer of Mitsui OSK Lines, Tsuneo Watanabe, is not about to rush into placing newbuilding orders. Watanabe, who heads the tanker business at Japan's biggest shipping company, stresses prudence above all in the tanker sector. This is not surprising, given what he's weathered since joining MOL - not altogether on purpose - in 1978. Today, he tells IHS Maritime, "The contango in oil prices has encouraged oil traders to book VLCCs for floating storage, resulting in a spike in freight rates. Other shipowners, believing a long-awaited freight recovery [is near], have started ordering VLCC newbuildings."
