After only the first few months of the navigation season on the Great Lakes, it is already clear that this will not be a banner year for shipowners. The only question is how tepid it will be. "It has certainly been a tough start," conceded Robert Lewis-Manning, president of the Canadian Shipowners Association. Tonnage through the St Lawrence Seaway was down 8.4% through the end of June against the same period last year. Coal has shown the sharpest drop, down 444,000 tonnes or 33%. Grain is down 397,000 tonnes (13%), and iron ore has dropped by 259,000 tonnes (12%).
