The first half of this year has brought encouraging signs of shipbreaking recovery, with the sector shaking off the worst effects of the general downturn that began in 2013. Performance gains, at levels not much below those of last year, are leading cash buyers to expect an upturn. But concerns remain. One of these, noted by cash buyer GMS in May, is that after a slowdown, the industry came to a virtual standstill at the start of August. From 31 July to 2 August, just one ship, concrete carrier Glory Sun, arrived at a breaking yard in Alang, India. The following day, the liquefied petroleum gas tanker Lady Stephanie arrived at Aliaga in Turkey. As this article went to press, four more ships had been admitted for breaking worldwide. The senior data transformation analyst for IHS Maritime & Trade, Paul Clemenson, commented that this "almost complete dearth of activity" is "very unusual".
