The German fleet has suffered since the financial turmoil began. The number of ships under ownership, operation, and management by German-domiciled companies has fallen significantly. Managed ships are down to just over 3,200, according to IHS Maritime data. Most of these are dry cargo/passenger ships, which include the preferred container ship type, numbering 2,500; there are 386 bulkers and 334 tankers today. German ships flying the domestic flag are down to just 762, of which 300 are dry cargo/passenger, with 30 tankers and a single bulker. Other ships will be included under other flags where bareboat charter agreements stipulate a dual flag. Most ships flying the German flag operate in domestic waters, or are fishing, non-seagoing merchant ships, non-propelled, offshore vessels, or are not merchant ships at all.
