Saga Shipholding, the Norwegian open-hatch bulk carrier subsidiary of Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), has been steadily getting ready for the ratification of the Ballast Water Management Convention since 2010. According to Nils Otto Bjorhovde, Technical Manager at Saga Shipholding, the company plans to retrofit its 24 sophisticated open-hatch bulk carriers with BWT systems by 2016, and Goltens Green Technologies is supporting the shipowner in the process. For the past few years, Saga Shipholding has been proactively undertaking 3D scanning and detailed engineering design projects for its carriers. Each carrier type has a completely different design but within each class the design is very similar. The small differences are taken out by the laser scanning adjusted in the detailed drawings.
