There have been very few reports of groundings resulting from the switch-over from high-sulphur to low-sulphur fuel as ships enter ECA zones but there have been dozens of reports of main engine failures. These have mostly been in waters off California, and so far they have been sorted without incident. The question is: just how serious could the issue become? This round- table discussion drew on the expertise of seven experts from the worlds of protection and indemnity insurance, pilotage, salvage, flag state, classification, and fuels and lubricants. Stuart Edmonstonfrom UK P&I Club recalled that, during his own sea-time, switching fuels was carried out an hour before arriving at port. "We informed the engine room team and moved on; we were changing fuels often. Today I don't think engines are designed for regular switches in fuel." The single incident he has seen ended with a ship aground in mud. "It's a general concern that an increase in breakdowns will lead to a rise in casualties, resulting in large claims and lengthy (and costly) litigation."
