Container shipping has long endured tough times, but developments in recent weeks have been particularly ominous. On 23 October, AP Moller-Maersk (APM), parent of Maersk Line, warned that weaker than forecast demand would reduce its 2015 profit by USD600 million to USD1.6 billion. On 14 October, German carrier Hapag-Lloyd commenced its IPO, but soon had to extend the book-building period to 3 November and cut the price range to EUR20-22 (USD22-24) from an initial range of EUR23-29. The offering priced at EUR20 per share, the very bottom of the reduced range and 23% below the mid-point of the initial range. By increasing the number of shares sold, Hapag-Lloyd was able to reach the revised gross proceeds target of USD300 million, which could increase to as much as USD345 million if the full overallotment option is placed.
