Henrik Uth says he is passionate about shipping and about safety at sea. Now chief executive of Survey Association (SA), the Copenhagen-based risk management company, his years at sea showed him how pivotal safety is to that life. Among his memories is a near-collision with a ferry that occurred when the two pilots on a huge box ship, on which he was first mate, were talking about football. The master and Uth intervened and a collision was avoided - and possibly hundreds of lives were saved. "The P&I clubs do a lot of work on loss prevention and a lot of their work has human-factor focus," he tells IHS Fairplay in Copenhagen. "About 80% of accidents at sea have human-related reasons." Too many of the accidents that do occur could be avoided, he adds, so it is in the interest of everyone in maritime to do what they can do to minimise risks.
