Drummond does not expect to open its new 60M tonnes/year port with direct loading until 31 March. Based on the company's average export rate of about 2.5M tonnes/month, minus 0.8M tonnes of coal thought to have been shipped before the port shut down, this is the equivalent of 6.5M tonnes of thermal coal removed from the seaborne market. Drummond president Jose Miguel Linares hinted in December that if the company's operations were suspended, it would have to temporarily halt 80% of the contracts of its 5,200 direct workers. However, minister of labour Rafael Pardo insisted his office would not authorise the suspension of labour contracts of Drummond's direct workers or its contractors.
