Sanctions on Iranian oil exports have been tough on the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC), yet its fleet has continued to operate openly, maintain most of its vessels in active trade, and enlarge its capacity, with the entry into service of 12 new VLCCs. With the potential lifting of UN sanctions on the export of Iranian oil becoming increasingly likely, it is an opportune time to review the effects these measures have had on Iran's principal exporter of crude. During the past couple of years there has been much speculation in the press, with NITC accused of taking measures to circumvent or obviate the sanctions. Some have gone as far as to claim that vessel identities might have been obscured or changed, and cargoes transhipped at sea to disguise their origin.
