More than 500 family members of the 1,031 passengers and crew who were killed when ro-ro ferry Al Salam Boccaccio 98's car deck caught fire, causing the ship to capsize and sink in the Red Sea in 2006, will continue the legal fight this year to prove what they believe: that Italian classification society RINA, and not the ferry's crew, was ultimately responsible for the tragedy. The first lawsuit (see IHS Maritime Fairplay 22 March 2012), fought by 500 different plaintiffs, was dismissed by the Genoa Court in January this year. A lawyer working on the case told IHS Maritime that the court found RINA immune to prosecution, enjoying 'state immunity' as the recognised organisation of Panama, the ferry's flag state.
