South Korea's Big Three builders - Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), Samsung HI (SHI) and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) - are keeping their lead in three key sectors. They are on top for building ultra-large container ships (ULCSs), offshore facilities and LNG carriers, even as their Chinese competitors dominate the dry bulk space. IHS Maritime's Sea-web shows that South Korea's builders have an orderbook of 105 ULCSs at an aggregate of more than 1.5M teu. Seoul's Big Three also have 44 drillships on order, compared with five for Chinese builders, which are seeking a bigger slice of offshore pie.
