STX Offshore & Shipbuilding (STX O&S) is going through a rough patch as it restructures its huge debt, but some light is finally appearing at the end of the tunnel. In late February, the market was surprised when the builder, South Korea's fourth-biggest, but whose debt exceeds $2Bn, won an order to construct up to 12 product tankers of 74,000dwt from Singapore-based tanker pool operator Navig8. The subsidiary of giant STX Corp said the contract, for eight firm orders and four options, had rewarded its efforts to resume winning deals. Delivery of these newbuildings is scheduled to be completed by the end of June 2016. The news followed a decision by the banks to give KRW1.8Tn ($1.68Bn) to help reorganisation of STX O&S. This funding helped the group win the Navig8 order.
