摘要

The fallout from the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami continues to spread across the economy. All but two of the country's nuclear power plants were idled after the disaster, with the then-governing Democratic Party of Japan pledging to phase out nuclear power completely from the energy mix in the long term. However, the election of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in December 2012 and the LDP's success in the upper house elections in July 3013 has changed that outlook. Abe has argued that Japan simply cannot afford to lose its nuclear power generating capacity. Although opponents of the nuclear option accuse the prime minister of being soft on safety, the sheer cost of filling the gap with fossil fuels has severely weakened the trade balance.
