Breakbulk carners hope for a sustained recovery this year after more than five years of depressed freight rates following the global financial crisis. Companies such as Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and Rickmers-Linie have expanded their breakbulk services in the expectation of a recovery. MOL told IHS Maritime that one of its focus areas was the shipping of plant equipment and heavy-lift cargo. "MOL works on project cargo with MOL Group companies such as UTOC, MOL Logistics, and MOL Kinkai because we can expand our business chances by co-operating with each other," MOL said. "The breakbulk cargo market is huge and it is better for us to work in harmony to get every single chance we may miss otherwise," added MOL, which expressed optimism about a sustained recovery based on infrastructure development in Africa and China.
