One of the consequences of the early sanctions back in 2013 was the frequent renaming and refiagging of National Iranian Tanker Co (NITC) vessels. NITC sought to find a flag administration both able and willing to register its vessels. Various flags were tried, but initially those of Tuvalu and Zanzibar (the Tanzanian Zanzibar International Registry of Shipping (TZIRS) formed the bulk of the new registrations). Tuvalu formerly expelled NITC vessels in late 2012, and at the same time Zanzibar stated that all initial registrations had lapsed and vessels were no longer registered. Despite Zanzibar's statement, the ships continued to display that register on the AISLive, and further vessels were apparently renamed and added to the flag in September and October 2012.
