China is stepping up chemical tanker safety scrutiny following a rise in activity in that sector and a spate of casualties. A Shanghai Shipping Exchange report showed that cabotage for such tankers rose by 6% year-on-year up to 30 September 2013,when274 chemical carriers aggregated 1.05M dwt in China's coastal waters, transporting about 21M tonnes of liquid chemicals. It also noted that chemical shipping companies in general did better last year, with some posting lower losses, while some managed profits, and predicted that China's chemical industry would maintain stable development or even recover strongly in 2014, which would boost chemical shipping companies.
