Russia's 'pivot to the East' is sending shock waves across western Canada's resource sector, causing major repercussions for ports and supply chains In July 2013, Russia's Uralkali withdrew from the Belarusian Potash Company cartel, a divorce that sent the price of Canadian potash plummeting on world markets and caused mine closures on the Canadian prairies. Then, in May 2014, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed the construction of a $400Bn natural gas pipeline to China, which will affect demand for Canadian gas in China, and plans to build about a dozen LNG terminals on Canada's west coast, primarily at the Prince Rupert and Kitimat ports. Yet another overseas development that could affect Canada is a move by the Russian-China Investment Fund to finance the construction of the first cross-border rail bridge between Russia and China.
